“Du… Du…” The ring echoed for more than twenty times, no one answered. With a sigh, he hung up the phone. His girlfriend has kept avoiding him since a week ago, no phone call answered, and no e-mail replied. He tried to recall their last date, and dug into it hard to see if he can find anything related to this. But nothing seems to be unusual. The last time they met, they hung out for a movie, dined at a rather fancy restaurant, then had sex in her place. Everything happened just the way they used to be. Movie was fine, dinner was delicious, and sex was always good (at least for him). Although the passion was no longer as strong as their first couple time, he still loved to touch her body, and to felt her warmth.
Why had everything change all the sudden?
Not for long, he realized he was actually saying it out, to himself and to the raven, and of course, the raven gave no answer. “Smart fellow,” he murmured, “smart enough to keep away from other’s issue.” Still the raven showed no response to his compliment, so he just went out shopping, leaving the window open, in hoping that the bird would disappear when he’s back.
But against his hope, the raven seemed to enjoy this place so much that it decided to make the corner of the room a permanent dwelling place. Every time he came back from school, he found the rubbish pile to be a bit bigger, and as always, the raven were sitting comfortably on the top of it, totally ignored his presence. At the first couple days, he kept trying different ways to make the bird leave. He lure it with some raw meat he bought from the supermarket, put a shining piece of metal by the window to catch its attention, he even went far to light up a candle and drew it near to the raven, in order to scare it away. But none of this work. Not even when the candle came so near that the heat almost caught its shining metal-like feather did it move a bit. Tall and still, though somehow lonely the raven sat, up on its throne of rubbish. So finally, he gave up the thought of driven the bird away.
On the other hand, his attempt to reach his girlfriend didn’t go well either. He stopped calling for a few days, thought it might give her some time to cool down, and then she might be willing to speak to him again. But just like throwing stones into the ocean, his call and e-mail reached no where, and got nothing back. Worried, sad and a bit angry, he then turned to call her friends to see if they know anything. She didn’t have much close friends, just like he did, so it didn’t take him long to go through all the name on the phone book. But no one answered his phone as if there was some kind of agreement between them not to do so (or maybe there really were). After went through the list twice, he decided to give it a stop. Lied on the bed, he started to imagine that maybe his hometown is now sinking into the ocean, and that’s why no one answered his call. He could now see in his mind a vivid image of a deserted town sank in the bottom of the deep dark water, surrounded by seaweeds, corals and fishes. He knew it’s crazy but for a long while, he just couldn’t put this wild imagination away.
