On one of the usual raining afternoon, he went back home and surprisingly found that the raven was not there. That’s rare, he thought. It was the first time he caught it off guard. Strangely, he found himself a bit disappointed. The raven, though hardly ever paid any attention on him, still awaited him here everyday that the sight of a black bird curled at the top of a pile of rubbish has already became a part of the room. “Maybe it will come back later,” he tried to comfort himself. He sat in front of the desk, turned on the lab top, and stunned; when he found that his girlfriend had send him an untitled e-mail. With trembled fingers, he clicked to open it.
I’m sorry for what I have put you through, and I know the past few weeks must be hard for you. But I really need some time to think it through, to think about us, and about our future. And I feel sorry to tell you that, this is the end of us. It’s not because of your departure, untitled if you stay it will change nothing and make things even worse. And it’s also not because you’re not been good to me. You’re the most tender man I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s just… I don’t feel love anymore. It seems so out of reach, and all we have left is some memories of the old days. But whenever I look at you, you seem so content about what we have, and that makes me feel guilty because my heart isn’t there with you. I know it’s cruel to do so, but I have to put an end of this. I know you’ll be happier this way, and it’s better for both of us. Good luck over there.
Best wishes
Though he had already expecting this to happen, the mail still gave him the shock as a blow in the mind. He got up, turned to face the pile to calm himself. Then he saw something on the top of the pile, glittering as no other things could have. He bent down, and picked it up.
It was the ring, the pair ring they bought on their first date. He looked at his finger, and found his own still on its place. He examined the ring again, compared it with his own. They’re almost identical, but the one he found is smaller. Suddenly he realized, it’s hers, the raven brought it to him. And he came to know that since the raven had done so, it will never be back again. He held the ring tight; it seemed so heavy that it kept pulling him down. He felt puzzled and sad; all the emotion of the past few weeks overwhelmed him and knocked him over that he got down on his knees, with the ring still rested in his palm. Finally, he let out a wild cry.
Then he got up, took out the cell phone and started to call her again. The ring echoed again and again, vibrated the air across the ocean. And beside the phone, he knew she was there. He could see her there, sat alone in the dark room, waited for the phone to stop. And slowly, as if she could sense his presence, she turned her head toward him. Her gaze flew through a thousand water and met his. Then she saw him there, sat alone in the dark room, waited for the phone to be answer, and stared back at her.
With the eyes as black and cold as a raven.
