Day after day he wandered alone in the wilderness, without ever stopping to sleep or eat. Because whenever he tried to do so, the image of the lonely tomb flashed back into his mind, and that always made him cry out in pain as if he had been beaten. Suffering from a lack of sleep and dehydration, he almost stumbled with each step, but yet he carried on his exile. He walked in his sleep, he walked when he was awake, but no matter what he did, he just couldn’t escape the curse, since he was the very cage that imprisoned him. Finally, he couldn’t go any further. Sambo collapsed in the middle of nowhere. Before darkness covered his eyes, Sambo pleaded for the gods to come and take him, to end his suffering.
Some one did come for him. But they were not who Sambo expected.
When Sambo opened his eyes, he found himself in a totally alien place, surrounded by white people. Sambo assumed he would be scared, but instead of that, he felt somehow secure and at ease facing these people. Though they didn’t speak the same language, a white man still managed to make himself understood through body language. It seemed that the white people had found him lying on the ground, almost dead, and they had taken him with them and tried to cure him.
“This is my home town,” the man waved his hand in the air and patted his chest, trying to make Sambo understand. “You stay, work for me. Get food to eat.” Not fully understanding what he meant, Sambo could still sense the kindness of the man, so he managed to reply with a smile.
Since then, Sambo lived with the family and worked for them. Things seemed to go well, thought Sambo. These white people were not like the ones who had raided his village. Though he knew there were some other slaves being tortured or beaten, he didn’t pay too much attention to it since he was the lucky one. His master treated him well, always gave him enough food to eat, warm clothes to wear. And what’s more, he didn’t see that vision for days. Maybe at last, thought Sambo, he might have escaped the vision because he had traveled so far. But against his will, the haunted vision came back again, and somehow Sambo came to realize a far worse fact: this place, this foreign city was the place he was meant to die.
