Hans and May are a couple living together, who live a rather normal life until one day May starts to have bad dreams. In the dreams she finds herself wandering alone amidst darkness. She feels she is being led somewhere, but something keeps her from ever finding out where. Hans doesn’t take her dreams too seriously, but then one day he returns home and finds May missing. Worried Hans begins to search for May, but just about the same time, a mysterious man shows up and shot Hans through the chest.
Hans wakes up in the hospital but amazingly, he seems to be unharmed at all. Not knowing why, he goes back home, but only to find someone else living in his place. All the trace of him living there is gone, no one seems to remember he, and the mysterious man is after him again. Confused and frightened, Hans runs away from his place, and comes across with a girl who leads him to an underground city—The Erased. Hans finds many people there had similar experience like him, and they generously offer him to stay there with them. But eager to find May, Hans refuses and continues his journey to find out the truth behind all these.
Being without social identity and money, the search doesn’t go well. Just when Hans is about to give up, he gets a phone call from May, asking for help. Her phone call leads Hans back to his hometown, which he finds totally different from his memory. Although seriously puzzled, May seems to be leaving clues like dropping bread crumbs for him to find her. As Hans move closer to the core of the whole thing, he finds out that the entire world might be an artificial one, and that May might never have been real. Even though, He still wants to find May and return to their original life. So he continues to follow the clues. Finally, Hans gets to the place where May is kept, and discovers the dire truth about the whole thing. The world is indeed an illusion, but so is he, and everyone exists inside May’s mind. In reality, May has suffered from an incurable disease and has gone through the process of cryonics. In order to keep her brain alive, a computer program has been installed in her mind, and it makes her believe that she is still living a normal life. Hans is also a computer program with artificial intelligence, but he is the only program created by May’s subconscious, so she could love and be loved by something rather true. Therefore the main program has no control over him nor can it remove him. And now he holds the key to the very existence of this world. In reality, the doctors are about to wake May up since they have found a cure for her, but they cannot, because May’s love toward Hans has bound her inside her own mind. So Hans must now make a choice: he can either let May go, so she can wake up in reality and live a true life; or he can ask May to stay, to live a happy life together, even though it isn’t real. The two worlds await his decision.
